Designed by Thomas Jefferson, the rotunda was modeled after the Pantheon, a second century temple in Rome. The university’s original buildings and the lawn were named “Academical Village” by Jefferson and were based on his principle that learning is a lifelong process and that the interaction between faculty and students is vital to the pursuit of knowledge.
