Ollantaytambo Authorities and PERURAIL are implementing improvements to address the new demand at this locality’s station

PERURAIL launched a new frequency system for the Ollantaytambo – Machupicchu route, effective January 1, 2008.  The aim is to provide tourists with more opportunities to visit the Inca citadel, with the possibility of boarding and exiting the train at the beautiful location of Ollantaytambo.

This change has entailed a major investment by the company and the concessionaire – Ferrocarril Transandino – in infrastructure for the station, expansions, signaling and IT system, resulting in a total change in services and assistance for passengers.

This new system has been widely welcomed by the Ollantaytambo population and authorities, who view this change as an important economic driver for their city and, of course, the possibility of forming part of the Machu Picchu tourist circuit.  The local authorities, represented by the Mayor Wilfredo Baca and his aldermen, have understood the magnitude of this change and have identified a number of activities that are being coordinated with the company in order to address the needs of visitors and the local population.

Works such as sanitation, reorganization of street vendors, illumination of public thoroughfares, fitting out of parking lots and reorganization of vehicle traffic are being carried out on a fast track taking advantage of the low season.  We understand that these changes and works underway could cause certain inconveniences and annoyance to the users of the railroad service, but we are aware that we are working in coordination with the local authorities so that this will not happen in the future, making the experience of visiting Machu Picchu pleasant from the time one boards the train.
