Keswick Hall's "Renshaw Afternoon Tea" takes its name from the first bona fide stars of the game – twin brothers William and Ernest Renshaw – who dominated the game of tennis in the 1880s at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club at Wimbledon.
Dubbed the "Renshaw Rush", the brothers won 13 titles between them from 1881-1889, including the gentlemen's doubles seven times. They greatly popularized the sport and helped set norms for play by being the first to use hard serves and to come toward the net with aggressive volleys. Everyone wanted to see the Renshaw brothers.
Due to its origins as a lawn sport, "The Championships at Wimbledon" is the only major tennis tournament still played on grass, a surface that challenges the best of players because of the increased speed of the ball. Tennis became so popular that in 1922 new facilities were built, financed partly from the accumulated reserves of the All England Club and partly by the issue of Debentures – corporate security notes that many doubted would turn the necessary profit. But applications for tickets in the first year were so great they had to be issued by a ballot, a system that has been maintained for every Championship since.
Wimbledon's Centre Court is designed to hold 14,000 people, and is the principal court on the grounds with other courts positioned around it. On its north side, overlooking Courts 14-17, one can find the "Debenture Holders' Lounge". From the earliest days of the tournament, spectators enjoyed their traditional afternoon tea courtside while watching the exciting matches. Even if you can't make it to the Championships at Wimbledon this year, you can enjoy your afternoon tea in authentic style at Keswick Hall, right down to the strawberries and cream. Hearty thanks to William and Ernest. |
