The word slice is not a four letter word, but it should be. Most golfers will suffer from this affliction at some point in their life. If you started with a slice and are still slicing, then this article will be a huge benefit to you.
Let’s start out with a clear understanding of what causes a slice. (All the following information is based
on a right handed golfer). A golf ball will react to what the golf club is doing during the swing. At no
time is this greater than at the moment of impact. When a golf ball is struck with an off center glancing
blow, the vertical axis of the ball will tilt. A tilt to the left produces a hook, while a tilt to the right causes
a slice. Both tilts, left and right, are caused by the face of the club looking too far left (hook) or too far
right (slice) during the moment of impact. So, based on this information, you now know that your slice is
a club face issue.
So, let’s fix that too open club face. At some point, or at multiple points in your swing, the face is
getting too open and you are not able to get it back to square before you hit the ball. Your plan is to
systematically determine where in the swing all this “openness” is happening. The following bullet points
should help you with your search.
• Check your grip. There’s a good chance that your left hand is too much to the side of the club.
Fix your grip by placing the heel pad of your left hand on top of the grip.
• The club face could be opening excessively during the backswing. A correction would be to
picture a big eyeball on the face of your club. Try to keep the eye looking at the ball for as long
as possible during your backswing.
• Look at the relationship between your left wrist and forearm at the top of the backswing. Is your
left wrist concave? Is the toe of the club pointing towards the ground? If you answered yes to one
or both of these questions then your club face could be too open at the top. Try to get your left
wrist in line (flat) to the forearm at the top with your clubface looking more toward the sky.
• If you are still slicing then keep reading. When you start the down swing, try to get that big
eyeball looking at the ball as soon as possible.
• The grand finale is to point the face of the club away from you at the finish.
If you follow these steps your slice should be a thing of the past. I hope this has helped. We look forward
to seeing you at Keswick Club in the near future.
